Evaluate 48 ÷ (6 + 2) • 3

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

using PEMDAS, what is your first step?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

do you know what I'm asking?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

parenthesis

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

good

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so you do (6+2) ---> (8)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

48 ÷ (6 + 2) • 3 turns into 48 ÷ 8 • 3

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

whats next?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

multiplication

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

close, but multiplication and division are on the same precedent level

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so what you do is just do things from left to right

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

48 ÷ 8 • 3 6 • 3 ... division (since that's to the left, it comes first) 18 ... then multiplication

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so its 18?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

correct

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

PEMDAS should really look like this P E MD AS notice how M and D are on the same level, so are A and S this means that you just do multiplication and/or division from left to right (same for addition/subtraction)

Thank you!!

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you're welcome
