How would I work the problem (without a calculator): "A soccer team played 160 games and won 65 percent of them. How many games did it win?"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

60% of 160 is 96 and 5% of 160 is 8.. so total game won is 104....

Thanks, I appreciate the help! But what if I really suck and don't know percentages off the top of my head? Is there anyway to work it out "on paper" numerically? Showing your work so I can see the process? :) thanks again!

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

Well yeah....65 percent...is equal to .65 So on paper you would write \[160 \times .65\] and do the multiplication out

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

And if you didnt know percents.... say you have 12 percent...and you dont know what that is in decimal form....you put it over 100 \[\frac{ 12 }{ 100 } = .12\]

Kay...so wouldn't I do 5 times 160, then 6 times 160, get 800 and 1000; add them and get my answer?

@DaniFlorida1029 :In General if x % of y=z then =>(xy/100)=z Here y=160 & x=65 . You need to find z
