Can anyone explain this to me? About currents The applied electric field seeks to continuously accelerate the charge, whereas distant collisions with other electric charges continually seek to slow the particle down.

yea..correct.. so because of this, on an average, we can say the electrons (which are the only charges available for conduction in conductors) travel with a constant average speed. This speed is very small and we call it as the drift speed of the electrons.
