How do terrestrial vertebrates (such as mammals, birds, and reptiles) breathe on land?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lungs?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

._.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well how else would they kipp

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well fish breathe underwater because the water provides them with oxygen.. How do land animals breathe?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thru oxygen as well silly.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Humans are animals. How do they breathe?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

fissh just have gills instead of lungs to extract oxygen. in fact. Animals like whales and dolphins have lungs and they have to come up for air.

OpenStudy (avii):

lungs nostrils

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@thomaster said "intercostal muscles between the ribs make the rib cage expand, that will create an under pressure in the longs so air will flow in" for the uses of ribs in terrestrial vertebrates for taking air in the lungs. That can somewhat be an answer for this as well?

thomaster (thomaster):

That is how animals with lungs breath yea :P

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Any further information that you can provide? :o

thomaster (thomaster):

uhmm the intercostal muscles between the ribs also make the rib cage contract, so air will flow out.
