The question is 7.86*4.6=? >I got as far as multiplying the 6 times 7.86 to get 4716 >Then 4 times 7.86 to get 3144 >and added them to get 7806 (The answer is 36.156 & this is how I was told to do it) What am I doing wrong?

OpenStudy (blurbendy):

nevermind, i see, you're trying to do it by hand

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Right, no calculators allowed. Trying to learn to do with out for a test.

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

So first 3 7.86 x 4.6 ------ 4 7 1 6 Then when you do 7.86 times 4....you need to add a 0 as the first number 3 7.86 x 4.6 ------ 4 7 1 6 3 1 4 4 0 ----------- 3 6 . 1 5 6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

AWESOME!! Thanks SO much! just one question, could you explain the placement of the zero? or is it because the number (6) is supposed to be before the four?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

*for future reference to remember TO add the zero and why*

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

Hmm... well when you multiplied the second part, you add a "0" to that answer because you were multiplying the value from the tens column. If it's from the tens, add a zero. If it's from the hundreds, you would add two zeros. So it would be the same...if you have 7.86 * 100 you do 7.86 * 0 = 000 then 7.86 times 0 again...but tack on a zero because we are now working with the "tens" place = 0000 then 7.86 times the 1....now you tack on 2 zeros because we are working with the "hundreds" place = 78600 and add altogether 78600 0000 000 -------- 786.00

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

I hope that made SOME sense lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Right, yeah that's what I'd thought just not the right words lol! Thanks so much again your the BOMB!! Thanks for bearing with me, I know I'm not the quickest at numbers :)

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

Don't worry about it! And you are very welcome :)
