The number N of state and federal inmates in millions during year x, where x > can be approximated by the following formula. N=0.05x-99.20 Determine the year in which there were 1.1 million inmates. Can someone show me the steps?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

N=0.05x-99.20 N is the number of imates, is 1.1 1.1 = 0.05x - 99.20 solve for x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh i left off an important peice the year 2002 (is x is less > or equal to)

OpenStudy (amistre64):

we can use that after you determine x id suggest you add and then divide .....

OpenStudy (amistre64):

i assume x is the number of years after 2002, so 2002+x would most likely be the final results

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes it is

OpenStudy (amistre64):

if the decimals are disturbing, move all decimals to the right by 2 1.1 = 0.05x - 99.20 110 = 5x - 9920

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how do you get the 1.1?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

by reading the question ...

OpenStudy (amistre64):

N is the number of inmates, when the number of inmates is 1.1 ....

OpenStudy (amistre64):

N=0.05x-99.20 N is the number of inmates, is 1.1 ... replace N by 1.1 1.1 = 0.05x - 99.20 , multiply both sides by 100 for convenience (not required, but nice nonetheless) 110 = 5x - 9920

ok thank you

OpenStudy (amistre64):
