What is a good gift for a mathematician I found this book http://www.amazon.com/Standard-Mathematical-Tables-Formulae-30th/dp/0849324793/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1371307285&sr=1-1&keywords=Standard+Mathematical+Tables+and+Formulae+30th+Edition but I don't know which edition is better the 30th or 32th or the other ones.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

i always have to be leary of books with so many additions .... just what do they keep messing up?

OpenStudy (abb0t):

$$

OpenStudy (anonymous):

idk much about the book

OpenStudy (amistre64):

its just a book of tables like the one in our reference section of the library. its nice and all, but you might want to opt for the gilded pages

OpenStudy (abb0t):

Give them $$

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I want a book that shows proofs, questions, interesting math stuff. at a university level .

OpenStudy (amistre64):

stephen hawkins newest rendition of God created the Integers is a nice read

OpenStudy (amistre64):

math stuff is boring ... learning the history behind it is awesome tho

OpenStudy (abb0t):

\[\huge $$$$\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i want it fully math based with lots of numbers. The person I'm getting it for said he loves math and has a library of math books, but he likes knowing the history behind everything. @abb0t I'm not giving money

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So I want to find a book that has history and numbers in it

OpenStudy (amistre64):

i gave a girl i liked a disney princess math book from the dollar tree for a christmas gift :)

OpenStudy (amistre64):

got a nice smile, a laugh, and a hug in return ..... best christmas ever!!! :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

also how old are you

OpenStudy (amistre64):

pfft, she was an adult too ....

OpenStudy (abb0t):

Give them a game boy

OpenStudy (amistre64):

im old enough to be able to afford a book at the dollar tree without asking my parents for an increase in my allowance ;)

OpenStudy (primeralph):

Euler's Toothbrush.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

didnt eulers toothbrush kill him tho?

OpenStudy (primeralph):

It did? Well that's the more reason why it's worth it.

OpenStudy (primeralph):

@0213 If you knew who Euler was, you'd want his toothbrush.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

who was he?

OpenStudy (primeralph):

One of the greatest Mathematicians.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

id rather have his notebooks, but his family is just being rediculously slow in translating them

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't think I can get his toothbrush

OpenStudy (amistre64):

get him the dvd of george peppard playing the role of euler brushing his teeth

OpenStudy (primeralph):

@0213 Do you know the man's specialty in math?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no, but

OpenStudy (primeralph):

To be honest, there's a whole lot you can get him....but I don't want you to get something that he already knows or doesn't like. Could get him a powerful math software, or if you code, you can build something for him. He'll probably appreciate something you make more than something you buy.

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

if he likes the history of math then 'Men of Mathematics' by ET Bell is a good one to get

OpenStudy (primeralph):

ohhhhh, you're not a math person........ Well, get him a book that joins Math to Biology I guess....something that links Math and nature........

OpenStudy (anonymous):

he is not interested in biology, he hates it

OpenStudy (primeralph):

Trust me, math is so wide and convoluted that you can't just say one book that people would like.

OpenStudy (primeralph):

There are lots of books, but it depends on who is getting the book.

OpenStudy (goldphenoix):

Borrow it from the library.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and do what?

OpenStudy (goldphenoix):

And read it.

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

The Music of the Primes by Professor Marcus du Sautay is a brilliant book appealing to math students and teachers

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

- and it doesn't cost 77 dollars
