A + C = 8
and
33A + 22C = 209

solve the system...

So lets solve for adults first

C = 8 - A

plug that into the second equation

33A + 22(8 - A) = 209
33A + 176 - 22A = 209
33A - 22A = 11A
11A + 176 = 209
        -176      -176
11A = 33

11       11

A = 3

There are 3 adults...how many kids?

99 + 22C = 209

When you have a system like that....you solve for 1 variable...that way you can substitute that in...and solve for the other variable as I did :)
