A holiday resort has rectangular-shaped pools, including a swimming pool for adults and a wading pool for children. The two pools are similar in shape and have dimensions, in meters, as shown in the figure below. What is the value, in meters, of x? 3 5 7 9

Well this would be a proportion problem...The rectangles are similiar so you can set up comparing the lengths to the lengths and the widths to the widths \[\frac{ 30 }{ x + 2 } = \frac{ 18 }{ x }\] This compares the length of the bigger to the length of the smaller...and the width of the bigger to the width of the smaller So now you can cross multiply and solve for 'x'can you take it from here...?

so would it be c?

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

Sorry for the late response....That is not what I get.. When we cross multiply we get 30x = 18(x + 2) simplifying this down a bit we get 30x = 18x + 36 now we would subtract 18x from both sides 30x - 18x = 18x - 18x + 36 12x = 36 and finally divide both sides by 12 12x / 12 = 36 / 12 x = 3 is what I get
