The land was divided into smaller plots with housing for sharecroppers After the Civil War, slavery was outlawed... but former slaves knew nothing except for agriculture, so in order to gain a livelihood they went back to plantations as sharecroppers--- people who rented housing and tools with a "share" of their "crops" in order to live. Also, plantation owners needed people to till their land, so they hired former slaves as sharecroppers, usually "renting out" little spaces of their land to sharecroppers, where a portion of their harvest could pay the loans a plantation owner gave them.
