what is 1/6 + 2/3???

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

when adding/subtracting fractions, you have to have a common denominator. Do you know what that is ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

in a fraction.....the top number is the numerator and the bottom number is the denominator. So, in this problem, before they can be added, you have to make the denominators the same. Your denominators are 6 and 3. To find a common denominator for 6 and 3.....what is the lowest number both 6 and 3 will go into ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

6

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

yes.....so 6 will be the common denominator..... Now it gets a little tricky.... take you first fraction....1/6.......this fraction is not going to change because 6 is already the common denominator. However, the other fraction will change... Let me draw this to show you.. ..|dw:1371573926781:dw|
