Two friends left school at the same time and drove in opposite directions. One friend averages 40 miles per hour and the other friend averages 35 miles per hour. When will they be 150 miles apart?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

these are the aswer choices 2.000 hr 2.875 hr 1.875 hr 2.140 hr

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

How fast are they moving apart, if they are going in opposite directions and one goes 40 mph and the other goes 35 mph?

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

After one hour, the first friend will be 40 miles away from the starting point. The second friend will be 35 miles away from the starting point, in the other direction. That means they are now separated by how many miles? Once you figure that out, divide 150 miles by the number of miles they separated in 1 hour, and you'll have the number of hours it takes to get 150 miles apart.

2hrs then

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):
