Why did many of the first island hopping battles in 1942 take place in the Solomon Islands? The Japanese were not in control of the Solomon Islands. Controlling the Solomon Islands would protect Australia. The Solomon Islands were close to Pearl Harbor and Midway. The Solomon Islands would provide landing areas for Allied bombers.
