The very rigorous medical program at a local university has a 10% drop out rate for each year. If the school admits 1,000 freshmen, how many diplomas will need to be ordered 4 years later? 656 diplomas must be ordered 410 diplomas must be ordered 316 diplomas must be ordered 240 diplomas must be ordered

OpenStudy (radar):

Do it a year at a time. Start with the first year, 10% or .1 times a 1000 is 100 100 freshman bit the dust, leaving 900 sophmores.

OpenStudy (radar):

Work the 2nd year the same way. Note the dropout rate is 10% each year

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so would it be 410?

@radar

OpenStudy (radar):

Well let me see The 2nd year 90 drop out leaving 810 juniors 3rd year, 81 juniors drop out, leaving 729 seniors 72.9 will drop out the senior year, lets call that 73 for practical purposes What does that leave who graduate, note it is not 410

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so 656

OpenStudy (radar):

Bingo!

Looks like the medical field is a tough one, but still worth the effort.
