The table here shows the land area in square miles of the five largest cities in the U.S. How much greater is the area of Juneau than the area of the next largest city? (image Being uploaded)

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

First, you get the difference of their areas... What exactly IS the next largest city after Juneau?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

juena alaska

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ummmm, ananconda alaska or what ever

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

You have to be sure, as this bit's rather crucial... ;)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok lets start over again

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

All right. Here's a sketch of what we have to do. We have the city Juneau, and we need the next largest city (in the table, after Juneau) We get the difference of their areas, and divide that difference by the area of that next largest city. That will be the answer in its raw form, but you probably want it in percent (%) form, so you multiply that answer by 100, and that'll be the answer in percent (%)

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

So, which of these cities is next largest, after Juneau?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Anchorage, Alaska

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

There you go :) Now subtract their areas, you get?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

k

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

or rather... (question is rather vague, I'm not entirely sure anymore if you subtract or just divide)

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

better get a second opinion... @amistre64 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1020

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

okay, so divide this by the area of anchorage...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ummm 1020/1697

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

yeah... are you allowed to use a calculator?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah sure im just studying

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

then...could you work that out with a calculator?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sure.

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

you get...?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

0.601060695344726

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

okay, multiply that by 100 (or move the point two digits to the right) and that's by how many percent the area of Juneau is bigger than Anchorage :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the answer is 6010

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

whoa now, that's too much, I said only two digits, not 4 :P

OpenStudy (amistre64):

How much greater is the area of Juneau than the area of the next largest city? what is the difference in area?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1020!!!!

OpenStudy (amistre64):

i would agree that "how much greater" would suggest comparing anchorage with juneau 2717 -1697 ------- 1020

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ohhh so thats not the anser?

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

We were so close :(

OpenStudy (amistre64):

Juneau is 1020 mi^2 greater than Anchorage your question, as posted, is not asking for a change in percentage; so there might be context that is missing.

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

I'm allergic to ambiguity too :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Im closing it up thanks im so proud of you guys.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

:)

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):
