It varies depending on the context, but in general it is something maintained in motion by a mechanical force. Not to be confused with a magnetic drive that uses a magnetic force to propel the object.

Well, to my knowledge it is used mainly in the oil and gas industry, mechanical drive gas turbines provide a reliable and efficient power source to run various machines and applications, even in the most aggressive environments.
