How many possible solutions can you get from solving a quadratic equation and why does it vary?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

There are only two possible solutions at most for a quadratic equation. It varies because sometimes the answers repeat. You can look at the discriminant which is b^2 - 4ac, and if the discriminant is negative, then there are 0 real solutions, if the discriminant is 0, then there is a repeated root and there is one real solution, and if the discriminant is greater than 0, then there are two different real solutions.
