That is the special triangle they are hoping you will use. Notice the angles are 45, 45, and 90 degrees. The hypotenuse goes from home plate to second base. Therefore, if you can find the length of that hypotenuse, you will know how far the catcher must throw it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

In a 45-45-90 triangle, the two legs are equal, and to find the hypotenuse you can use \(\Large \text{hypotenuse} = \text{leg}*\sqrt{2}\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok so i would do 90* √ 2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and i would get 127.2 and it tells me to round to the nearest 10th @SmoothMath

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Almost correct. Your rounding is a bit off.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[\Large 90*\sqrt{2} \approx 127.279220614\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes thats what i got but whould i round it to the nearest 10th

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do you remember how to round? Step 1: Find the digit you are rounding to. Step 2: Look at the digit after it. If that digit is \(\ge 5\), round up. If that digit is <5, round down.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so it would be 128?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That would be rounding to the ONES place, and you would be rounding incorrectly, too.|dw:1371672189995:dw|
