Simplify -3(2x - 5) - 4(x + 7)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Use the distributive property to solve. -3 * 2x, -3 *-5, -4 * x, and -4 * 7.

You get -6x +15 -4x -28.

Now combine like terms, so -6x + (-4x) and +15 +(-28).

I got -10x -13. You have to distribute to get to it. So -3, use it to multiply inside the parenthesis. You would multiply -3 and 2x = -6x, and -3 * -5 = 15 since a negative times a negative is positive. Now do the other side, -4 times x = -4x and -4 times 7 = -28. Your new equation is -6x +15 -4x -28. Now just combine like terms, which are -6x and -4x, 15 and -28. Just add both to get -10x -13.
