Conditional formatting is your way of telling excel to format all the cells that meet a criteria in a certain way. For eg. you can use conditional formatting to change the font color of all cells with negative values or change background color of cells with duplicate values.

In financial planning, you might use conditional formatting to display when numbers are in the red or negative. You might do so by actually formatting the box to display red text if the number goes below 0. You might also use conditional formatting to group like expenses or like deposits, etc. Without anything other than your simple statement to go on, the answers will be rather generic. Hope this one helped!
