How do I name the following organic compounds?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (abb0t):

The last one is 3-methyl-1,4-pentene

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you, do you know any of the others or how i can find them?

OpenStudy (abb0t):

You need familiarize yourself with IUPAC rules for nomenclature. Try naming the others yourself. I will tell you if you're right or wrong and help you get the correct name.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i will look them up thank you.

OpenStudy (abb0t):

This is a great site I found extremely useful which I kept as a reference, I think will benefit you greatly! :) http://butane.chem.uiuc.edu/cyerkes/Chem104A_BFA05/Genchemref/nomenclature_rules.html

OpenStudy (abb0t):

Too many rules for me to type out. Sorry :) but that site is very helpful for first portion of organic chemistry

OpenStudy (anonymous):

first one is: 4-methyl-hpt-2-ene second : prop-1-yne or simply propyne. third: 2,2,5,5-tetramethyl-hept-3-ene fourth: 3-methyl-pent-1,4-diene. use the rules given by abbot and see if you get these answers or not.

OpenStudy (abb0t):

Ah, I forgot the diene, thanks for that @ANISH95 but I think you should let them try the rest themselves after giving them assistance. That way they can learn; they won't have the help of some great people like yourself on an exam :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

apologies,,, sir.. from next tym. i will keep this in mind.

OpenStudy (abb0t):

Sorry, I'm just extra particular for o-chem, it's a tough subject but hugely imIportant to really grasp esp, since its a course usually science or pre-med students take. NO hard feelings.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no sir absolutely not! i understand.. u r right in saying this. i was just giving him the answers to check his own results. but yes, one needs to practice, thnx.
