Choose the correct description of the graph of the inequality -2x > 10. Open circle on -5, shading to the left. Closed circle on -5, shading to the left. Open circle on -5, shading to the right. Closed circle on -5, shading to the right.

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

Firstly, when do you use a closed circle and when do you use an open circle?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this would be open!

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

Correct this would be open...because it is not "or equal to" so we have -2x > 10 What we want...is to solve for x...not -2x right To do this...notice how x is being multiplied by -2...we cancel that out...but dividing both sides of the equation by -2....-2 / -2 = 1 right? right..so -2x > 10 -------- -2 -2 ***it is important to remember here....when you multiply or divide by a negative number with inequalities....you switch the direction of the sign****** this becomes x < ?
