Independent: the equations can't be derived algebraically from each other. For example, \[x+y=6\]\[3x-2y=4\]independent, because you can't do anything to one equation to turn it into the other\[x+y=6\]\[2x+2y=12\]dependent, not independent, because the 2nd equation is just 2x the first equation. The system shown is consistent because it has a solution: the lines intersect at the solution.
