Well, fruity loops is good for beginners. And it's pretty impressive, but not cheap.

I always use FL studio :) 
Pro Tools is a good one too, as well as Reaper and Cubase.
Audacity is for free but it's also limited.
You won't get a good DAW for free.

I've heard tha pro tools and ableton are the VERY best.

pro tools is really hard to get used to . if you have a mac go for logic pro it's super simple to use and it makes really good quality music.
