best start with an interactive course in my opinion. I like the intro to computer programming from MIT on edX. They are between semesters at the moment, but you can still view the course. It comes with a book too.

For a beginner, I'd recommend looking at the courses at http://see.stanford.edu

Note the "in basic" part. They have been clear in this post, and another, that they are specifically looking at the language basic. So unless there is a huge misunderstanding issue, they are not looking for a basic course but for a course on basic.
