Solve for the variable using geometric mean?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

altitude = 'geometric mean' of segments of hypotenuse

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

x = \(\sqrt{25 \times 16}\)

The teacher did it differently. As long as I can remember she divide that triangle into three triangles (sorry i can't remember much, im reviewing for my exam tomorrow and we did this like 4 months ago)

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

She would have done it using similar triangles.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes that lol

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

But, here the q clearly asks us to use the geometric mean thingy

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

Sooo... there is no harm in using it :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Can you explain it to me, totally forgot how to do it using similar triangles

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

Sure :)

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

can you draw the given triangle for me :)... so we can work on it :)

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

thank you :) how many triangles do u see over there ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

three

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

and all 3 similar eh ?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

if so, how do u knw they are similar ?
