OK, lets work out teh lengths that cannot form a triangle
they will look like below :- |dw:1372010627265:dw|
if you see, the third side cannot quite make it reach the first side.
first get this visual picture, then we can work the lengths easily
I get that they can't reach..
its okay :) they may be teaching other things, they wont be having time for everything
you can easily see that, length of other two sides MUST always be greater than the middle side. then oly, they form a triangle

.okay..
those two side lengths MUST be greater than the middle side length. for it to make a triangle. else the two sides will be dangling like that...
having that knowledge, pick any 3 numbers.
such that, sum of any two numbers MUST be greater than the third number
lets pick 1, 2, 3 and see if they fit for a triangle or not
Im listening...
1, 2, 3 : 1+2 > 3 ? (NO, so reject)
lets pick some other numbers : 2, 2, 3
2, 2, 3 : 2+2 > 3 ? (yes) 2+3 > 2 ? (yes) 3+2 > 2 ? (yes) so 2, 2, 3 form a triangle.
lets do one more which have all 3 numbers different : 3, 4, 5
