Randall set a personal goal to exercise at least thirty minutes for half of the days during the last two months. He recorded his exercise time each day. Use the box and whisker plot of his data to determine whether he reached his goal. Explain.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay i think i know the answer just i want someone to make sure im doing it right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay so would i just need to find the median for the question, if so he did not complete his personal goal to exercise because he one did it for 20 minutes

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

isn't the band in the box the median?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

doesn't the median being 20 minutes imply that he didn't exercise 30 or more minutes for half of the days?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well yes, thats what i was thinking

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

hmm, it makes it unlikely, but does it make it impossible?

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

I guess we don't know that from the median alone.

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

the end of the box at 15 minutes — what does that mean?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its the minimum

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

well, what about the line going to left, then?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait, youre right, i read something wrong the line going to the left is the minimum

OpenStudy (anonymous):

actually im not sure what it means when the box..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the box is at 15 do you know anyone who does?

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

I escaped having to learn this stuff, somehow. I'm not confident that I can guide you here. If he exercised 30 minutes on half of the days, the median would be at least 15. To get the median to 20, either he must have exercised long than 30 minutes on some of those days, or exercised on the other days as well. The whiskers suggest that at least one day he didn't exercise at all, and at least one day he exercised 60 minutes. But I don't know if the whiskers can represent multiple days where he didn't exercise, or exercised 60 minutes.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Q3 is 30 everything above Q3 represents 25% of the entire data set, so only 25% or 1/4 of all the days were spent exercising at least 30 minutes

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so he did not meet his goal

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
