the perimeter of a basketball court is 90 meters and the length is 6 meters longer then twice the width. What are the length and width?

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

draw a picture and include labels |dw:1372105372274:dw| so \[90 = 2w^2 + 6w\] which can be written as \[2w^2 + 6w - 90 = 0\] divide each term by 2 \[w^2 + 3w - 45 = 0\] you need to solve the quadratic equation using the general quadratic formula. when you have the positive solution for the width substitute ot to find the length. hope this helps
