Determine whether the graph of y = 4x2 + 5x − 8 opens up or down and whether it has a maximum or minimum point. Up; Minimum Up; Maximum Down; Minimum Down; Maximum No clue; these questions are my weakness.

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

look at leading coefficient

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, I figured out; it's downwards.

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

if it is positive, then the graph opens up if it is negative, then the graph opens down

OpenStudy (anonymous):

On Wolfram; it shows the graph goes down.

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

lol really

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

And it's min, but I learned I can't always trust wolfram on this type of question -.-

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

wolfram shows up for me hmm

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That's down?o;

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

lol its called up :)

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

that smile is called "Opens up"

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

the other way is called "Opens down"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh o: I thought it was the other way. How do i determine min and max?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

if it opens UP, it will have MIN value

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

if it opens DOWN, it will have MAX value

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You just helped me with all the questions like this :P
