Here's an example of a ratio:

A ratio is a method of comparing or relating two different amounts of the same kind. When describing ratios you usually describe one thing in terms of the other. In this case, suppose your friend has three apples and you have five apples. Then we say the ratio of apples between your friend and you is 3 to 5.

But then, from that, other ratios can be introduced...such as the ratio of apples you have to the total amount of apples between both of you which is 5:8
