Can anyone help with an algebra word problem? Two mechanics worked on a car. The first mechanic charged $85 per hour and the second mechanic charged $115 per hour. The mechanics worked for a combined total of 20 hours and together they charged a total of $2150. How long did each mechanic work? First mechanic _____ hours Second mechanic ______ hours

OpenStudy (kropot72):

Let the first mechanic's hours be A and let the second mechanic's hours be B. Then A + B = 20 .........................(1) and 85A + 115B = 2150 ...........(2) To solve these equations to find A, multiply both sides of equation (1) by 115 and call the new equation (3). Then by subtracting equations (2) and (3) the terms in B will be eliminated and A can be found.
