Let the first mechanic's hours be A and let the second mechanic's hours be B. Then
A + B = 20 .........................(1)
and
85A + 115B = 2150 ...........(2)
To solve these equations to find A, multiply both sides of equation (1) by 115 and call the new equation (3). Then by subtracting equations (2) and (3) the terms in B will be eliminated and A can be found.
