A plane travels 350 km south along a straight path with an average velocity of 125 km/h to the south. The plane has a 30 minute layover, and then travels 220 km south with an average velocity of 115 km/h to the south. What is the average velocity for the trip?

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

Plane flies 350 km + 220 km = 570 km Time taken = time to fly 350 km @ 125 km/h + 30 min layover + time to fly 220 km @ 115 km/h 350/125 = 2.8 hours 30 min = 0.5 hours 220/115 = 1.91 hours Divide total distance traveled by total time to find the average velocity overall.
