A student designed an experiment to test the effect of temperature on bacterial growth. He grew three different cultures of E. coli in three incubators at different temperatures. What was the independent variable in this experiment? A.length of experiment B.number of bacteria C.reproduction rate D.temperature

thomaster (thomaster):

An independent variable is the variable you can choose and manipulate. What do you think is the independent variable in this experiment?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The independent variable is c. I think idk.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

or is it A

thomaster (thomaster):

No A and B are fixed variables, they need to be the same for every culture. The reproduction rate is what you're going to investigate. The temperature is the variable that you're going to manipulate for the different cultures to see if it has an effect on the growth rate
