PLEASE HELPPPP : Solve given the root indicated: Equation: x4 - 5x2 - 10x - 6 = 0 Root: -1 + i

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

A polynomial with real coefficcients that had complex roots, the complex roots come in complex conjugate pairs. If -1 + i is a root, then -1 - i is also a root.

@mathstudent55 these are the possible answers that the question lists: {3, 1, -1, ±i} {-1 ± i, 3, -1} {3, -1, -1 + i} {-1, -i, i, 1}

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

A {3, 1, -1, ±i} B {-1 ± i, 3, -1} C {3, -1, -1 + i} D {-1, -i, i, 1}

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Since -1 + i is a solution, -1 - i is also a solution. Which is the only choice that has both -1 + i and -1 - i listed?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@mathstudent55 I guess D because I'm assuming you meant "+1 -i is also a solution" right? Maybe? lol idk

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

D doesn't even include the solution you were given, -1 + i. How can it be correct? D list 4 solutions, -1, -i, i, 1. None of those are -1 + i.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@mathstudent55 But all the others have a 3 and you never mentioned a 3 anywhere... no need to make me feel dumb...

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Let's start from the beginning. This equation is a 4th degree polynomial equation. Right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@mathstudent55 No it's fine thanks anyway.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

ok
