Read the passage and then answer the question below. From The New York Times, November 2, 1917 Mrs. Atherton pleads for the ballot (presumably) as a means of bettering the condition of the eight million women "who earn a living shoulder to shoulder with men." Mrs. Atherton herself is one of these women, as this eight million includes every "female of ten years or over engaged in gainful occupation"—from the grand opera singer, with her contracts running into the thousands of dollars, down to the domestic, underpaid and overwork, slaving twelve to fourteen hours a day, year in and year out, with no vacation, in the kitchens of other women. Does Mrs. Atherton think that the ballot will shorten the hours and raise the wages of these women? Just how does Mrs. Atherton think the ballot will benefit them? Are the interests of women and children better protected in the States where women vote than in the States where they do not vote? If we refer to some of the suffrage States, we will find that in Wyoming, where the "mother half of humanity" has voted for forty-eight years, the courts have declared unconstitutional a law which was put on the statute books prohibiting the employment of women more than fifty-six hours a week and more than ten hours a day, thereby destroying one of the safeguards erected for protection of the working woman. Also a pamphlet issued by the National Child Labor Committee, entitled "What State Laws and Federal Census Say About Child Labor," devotes a chapter to the "States Weakening or Nullifying Standard Provisions by Exemptions," and among these is Wyoming, with six other woman suffrage States ... Ethel Beyea, Secretary Wage Earners' Anti-Suffrage League Which of the following passages uses word choices that most clearly illustrate the author's opinion? "with six other woman suffrage States" "Mrs. Atherton herself is one of these women" "thereby destroying one of the safeguards" "with her contracts running into the thousands"
