i think the 4 & 5 have to stay together.. -4/5 is a fraction

No, they don't have to stay together.

$$12 = -\frac{4}{5}x$$Multiply each side by 5, what do you get?
$$5*12 = -\frac{4}{5}*5*x$$$$60 = -4x$$Now divide each side by -4
$$\frac{60}{-4} = \frac{-4}{-4}x$$$$-15 = x$$

You can add, subtract, multiply, divide, take square roots, etc. so long as you do the same thing to each side of the equation.
