Can your smart score decrease over time?

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

I have seen it go down on people. If you look at the graph, it goes down at times. I don't think that is always just time. They may have modified the formula at some point, and there is always the issue of getting abuse reports.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank Ya!!

OpenStudy (kymber):

I'm petty sure it has something to do with other user's scores, so if some people go up, it may go down.

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

np. I am sure the OS people could answer in more detail... but they tend to be a little vague on what does the smart score. However, a few hints have come out in Preetha's talks. They track more than what you see and it is put into an evolving formula that they pretty much have how they want at this point. In fact, there is no discernible mathematical correlation between the sub scores and the smart score! People have had a sub score higher than their smart score! Rare, but it has happened. So there are lots of little factors you don't see. Probably about how many people answer a question you are involved in, possibly their scores, good chance the number of tags does part, and with modern servers it is not out of the ballpark to do basic content analysis for words like good, thanks, and so on.

thomaster (thomaster):

people can revoke medals given to you. That can also decrease your smartscore. Also smartscore usually decrease when you're not active for a certain time (but only a decrease of 1 or 2)

OpenStudy (dumbsearch2):

Hmm, totally :P

OpenStudy (ja1):

Also if a questions you received medals on is deleted those go away too

OpenStudy (dumbsearch2):

Yeah. @ja1 @thomaster One or two? I see profiles that used to be 99 and are now 66.

thomaster (thomaster):

They probably must have changed the smartscore formula then. It's very unrealistic that someone with smartscore 99 just gets downgraded to 66.

OpenStudy (dumbsearch2):

*cough* But it happens. Ask @ParthKohli, he's been on this site longer then me.

OpenStudy (dumbsearch2):

He's seen that stuff happen.

Parth (parthkohli):

Yes, SmartScore can decrease over time, but that thing is very slow. Basically, your score is just another way for percentile. If you are not answering as many questions as other people, then your percentile goes down and your SmartScore decreases.

OpenStudy (dean.shyy):

Probably based on updated score formulas, and other site updates over time that would affect the score.
