Which of the following expressions when simplified equals x8 ? A. x6 ÷ x2 B. x7 ÷ x C. x8 ÷ x D. x11 ÷ x3
C
thank you
...really...?
\[\frac{ x8 }{ x }\] is this right...?
because 8 divided by 1 is eight. the x by itself represents 1.
wait, sorry im a little lost... what does the x mean is it (unknown number) (variable) or (multiplication sign)
when there is a variable all alone without a coefficient or an exponent, like for example X. it equals 1. 1x. just always consider there to be a 1 infront of a variable that is alone.
ok... so it's a variable... why wouldnt the answer be 8 then...? why didnt the x's cancel each other...?
okay. pretend that the x's were not there. so all you would have is 8 divided by 1, because the alone x represents 1. 8/1. then that equals 8. then you can add the x's back on if it helps you. then you would have 8x or x8 either way you would want to put it, but teachers like the coefficient to go first.
what i dont understand is that typically, when the number is written after the variable, it usually indicates (to the power of) ie x8 usually means \[x ^{8}\]
so shouldnt the answer be "d"...?
well the way that she typed it was x8... not x^8. x^8 is like saying x to the power of 8. but it was not written that wat. therefor the equation is really x8 divided by x. which is the same as 8x divided by x. which is why the answer is C
do you understand sweetie?
...ok...thanks for explaining hey
are you sure you understand? I can help you some more.
agree with Jack... if it were a coefficient, I'm sure it would be to the left of the variable.
Although, people really SHOULD at least get used to using the ^ sign for exponents.
that's the only reason I thought that she meant 8x because I have had question on my quiz's where it will say x4 or something like that and it means the same at 4x.
unless @maryjsgirl420 wants to correct her post, im sticking with my answer.
