Which country controlled Vietnam prior to the Vietnam War?

I may be wrong so don't quote me, but I don't ever remember another country controlling Vietnam before the Vietnam War. All I can say is French were in then pulled out, so U.S. headed in with the South part of Vietnam to end communism from spreading further.

^France did pull out from Vietnam in 1954 and I think it had something to do with the Geneva Conference. They also got hugely defeat so that is a part too.
