Find the sum of the geometric series

OpenStudy (mathisfun13):

OpenStudy (mathisfun13):

i got 4 for an answer but thats not an answer choice

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

well for an infinite sum the formula is \[S_{\infty} = \frac{a}{1 - r}\] the value of a is 3 and r = -1/3 so you are looking at \[\frac{3}{1 - (\frac{-1}{3})}\] or \[S_{\infty} = \frac{3}{\frac{4}{3}}\] so I don't think the sum will be 4...

OpenStudy (mathisfun13):

i got 9/4?

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

yep... that makes more sense
