Spacial reasoning problem... Q1.You are participating in a race. You overtake the second. What position do you finish? Q2.If you overtake the last then you place is?

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

q1: pretty popular trick question. overtake the second, congrats, now you're in second (since you have to overtake the current 'first' to get to first place)

OpenStudy (jack1):

nice, i read it in an email for the first time just then

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

q2 is funny. nobody can overtake the last placer (unless it's a multiple lap race)

OpenStudy (jack1):

Possible Answers: Q1. a) last b) third c) first d) second e) fifth Q2. a) last b) second last c) cant be any d) could be any e) first

OpenStudy (jack1):

double points TJ, props

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I dont see how the first is a trick question. Three people are racing, you are in 3ed, ahead of you is second and ahead of him is first. If you get ahead of second place you become second. The second question makes no damn sense at all. It is an invalid nonsensical question. But I think they want the answer to be last.

OpenStudy (jack1):

i honestly emailed back "second last" my mate just emailed back laughter

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

@JBrandonS trick question because one is usually tempted to answer 'first' to the first question due to being one step in front of the 'second', forgetting that there was already someone in the first position.

OpenStudy (jack1):

the email i got said "answer these q's as quick as you can" and had a list of ten questions, i can see that if you have time to consider it then it becomes clear, but spur of the moment, it's like TJ said "he's in front 2nd, so he must be first"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But its not tricky to be tricky. It is tricky because people are tempted to answer wrong due to their own flawed logic. I can see where you are coming from however, I just dont agree.
