Assume that y varies inversely as x. If y = -6 when x = -2, find y when x = 5.

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

Hi :) When two values vary inversely, it means their product will be the same, no matter what. So, when y = -6, x = -2 What's the product of x and y then?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-12 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol sorry i meant just postive 12

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

Good :) Now, remember, I said, that if two values vary inversely, their product will always be the same? Means xy = 12 no matter what. So here, you're given now x = 5 5y = 12 It's just a matter of solving for y now :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-10

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

Unlikely :P Product of 5 and -10 is not 12, but -50 :P

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

\[\Large 5y = 12\] Don't hesitate to have fraction values, they're quite acceptable :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y = 2.4?

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

Yup :) Or \[\Large y = \frac{12}5\] I personally prefer fractions, but you're correct ! Good job :)

tnx @terenzreignz
