The MechMOOC is just an easy way to follow an open content system.  The cycles are regular, but not really mandatory.  Because the goal is more organized self learning, you could start now and still ask questions people here, etc.  The only thing you would not be getting is the emails.  Not like that is a huge difference and you can use the blog on the MechMOOC web site to find the details of things they suggest people do.

For now, this sequence of the MechMOOC has lasted for only 2 weeks (out of 8), many participants haven't even started yet, so feel free to join the fun. You can follow all the emails they send: http://mechanicalmooc.wordpress.com/category/seq17jun13/ . And there are many spaces (including this one, as well as Codecademy.com groups) where you can get help and encouragement from people who are also learning Python.
