OpenStudy (anonymous):

I have a math question but I can't rewrite it into here for help, is there a way to paste an image or attach an image? I really need help with this math problem

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (ashleyisakitty):

Do you see at the bottom of your comment box? It says attach file...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

save the image to your computer then attach file.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

save the image and then click attach file and attach the image

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if u are having problems send me the url in a messge and i will put the picture on for you

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok, thank you! I am shiny, brand new to this site! attaching file now...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no, problems with the site, all my math homework comes across as an image and so it's hard to copy is all

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[f(x) = x +4 and g (x) = -x2 + 3 , find (gof) (x)\]

OpenStudy (ashleyisakitty):

Well firstly allow me to welcome you to Openstudy :~) In my opinion it would have been easier to type the equation as opposed to making everyone download it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[f(x) = -x \ +4 and g (x) = -x2 + 3 , find (gof) (x)\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

their we go sorry bout the first one

OpenStudy (anonymous):

my confusion on that problem is whether she is asking me to multiply functions, later she asks me another equation and asks me to find (fg)(x) which I assume means to multiply, therefore I am confused as to what I am supposed to do

OpenStudy (ashleyisakitty):

find (gof)? ive never seen this is in an equation before.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

me neither, hence my confusion...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think the "o" is raised, a symbol, not the letter "o"

OpenStudy (jhannybean):

Oh. you've got your two equations \(f(x)=-x+4\) and \(g(x)=-x^2 +3\) right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Jhannybean Yes

OpenStudy (jhannybean):

Alright. So you're to find \(g \ o \ f\) which is the same as \(g(f(x))\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

isn't that just multiplying?

OpenStudy (jhannybean):

For this, plug in your function f(x) into the variable"x" in g(x)

OpenStudy (jhannybean):

No, this is substituting a function asa variable to find a general equation.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OH so I rewrite -x2+3 but instead of x I put my f(x) function?

OpenStudy (jhannybean):

Yes :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ahhahaha, ok! thank you very much. I was turned on to this site by one of my classmates because I am a total dunce when it comes to math.

OpenStudy (jhannybean):

\[\large g(f(x)) = -(-x+4)^2+ 3\]

OpenStudy (ashleyisakitty):

Jhanny saves the day again!

OpenStudy (jhannybean):

Simplify what is inside the parenthesis first. \[\large -(x^2 -8x+16)+3\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then distribute the negative

OpenStudy (jhannybean):

Yep :)

OpenStudy (jhannybean):

Then simplify the equation. You've got it from here :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yep. but what if they give you and equation and want g o f (#) instead of g o f (x)? do you then insert f(x) in place of the # they gave you instead of the x?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i.e. f(x) 1-4x g(x) 3x2+2 (g(f(x)) (1)

OpenStudy (jhannybean):

Actually, yeah.you're right.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so solve the same way you showed me and then substitute x in the resulting answer for the number they gave you, in the above example, 1?

OpenStudy (jhannybean):

Let's try this out.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so f(x) = 1-4x and g(x) = 3x2+2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

therefore... 3(1-4x)2 +2 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then factor and solve like before?

OpenStudy (jhannybean):

No no no....

OpenStudy (jhannybean):

you wnt to find.....g(f(1)), yes? f(x) -> f(1)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so f(x) = 1-4(1) which would solve to be -3 then insert -3 into the g(x) equation?

OpenStudy (jhannybean):

Yes! you're on the right path :) f(1) = -3 :) and now you're finding g(-3) :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

see, it makes sense if someone can just walk me through how to do it once, but all the notes and videos I get in class only confuse me more. Thank you very much for all your help!! I might actually pass this class (this is my 3rd attempt!) and it's only math 1314...

OpenStudy (jhannybean):

Just read the book and follow their methods :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I tried, but I really just don't understand, if you want me to parse your sentences or proofread and essay I'm your gal, but math....nope.

OpenStudy (jhannybean):

So \(g(-3) = 3(-3)^2+2 = (3\cdot 9) +2 = 29 \) did you get that? :)

OpenStudy (jhannybean):

It happens. I fail at english and writing...anything to do with language.:\

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yep, once you showed me how to set it up I sped right along to the end and got 29.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hehehe yea it's a give and take, you need help in English, you just let me know!

OpenStudy (jhannybean):

:D I've got to head out.Take care!
