5t − 3(1 + t) Use the distributive property to simplify the expression

OpenStudy (anonymous):

We need to distribute the -3 in front of the parenthesis. We do this by multiplying all terms in the parenthesis by -3. So: \[5t- 3(1+t)=5t -3 -3t = 2t-3\] It's important that you don't forget the negative sign, because if you distribute the 3 but don't distribute the negative, your answer will be incorrect.
