Why did Abraham Lincoln say, “A house divided against itself cannot stand?” Lincoln did not believe the Union should be divided. Lincoln believed that any house including slaves would eventually fall. Lincoln did not believe that the Northerners should take Southerners' land. Lincoln believed that sectionalism was the only form of government the Union could agree upon.
