Stats : In the population of adults the proportions of people in various marital status are : Single(Forever alone) =35%,Married =60%,Divourced =5% A person is selected at random.If that person is not divourced.Find the probability that he or she is singlle (i.e A/B) }

OpenStudy (amistre64):

assume 100 people; how many people are single or married?

OpenStudy (uri):

35 are single,60 are married and 5 are divourced.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

and since we are only concerned with not divorced; that leaves us the set of single or married the total number of single or married is 95, correct? and how many of that set are single?

OpenStudy (uri):

Okay yes 95 are married from which 35 are single.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

|dw:1372683481260:dw| then 35 out of 95 gives a probablitity if 35/95

OpenStudy (uri):

I don't undertand that diagram but 35/95 yeah..

OpenStudy (amistre64):

the diagram is simply saying that: given the set B|dw:1372683811441:dw| the probability of A within B is just: the number of A within B, divided by the total number of B

OpenStudy (amistre64):

so in this case: the set of not divorced consists of single + married the number of single within that set consists of single, therefore: \[P(single|(married~or~single))=\frac{single}{married+single}\]

OpenStudy (uri):

Got it so,35/95 =0.3684210526

OpenStudy (amistre64):

yep, which is usually rnded to 4 decies

OpenStudy (uri):

So the end? The probablitity is 0.3684

OpenStudy (amistre64):

thats the way i read it yes; some options love to put that into % format ... but its fine the way it is

OpenStudy (uri):

Okay Thankyouuuu \(\Huge \color{magenta}{ \ddot \smile } \)

OpenStudy (amistre64):

good luck ;)
