alright, can someone help me ?
With what?
what this man, i dont understand. Part 1] Show all work in simplifying 2x^2+8x-42/x^2+12x+35 (Be sure to list restrictions). [Part 2] Use complete sentences to explain your process.
2x^2+8x-42 / X^2+12x +35 = 2x^2+14x-6x-42 / X^2+7x+5x+35 [ By splitting 8x so that its product is ‘2x^2 * -42’ and 12x in a way such that its product is ‘x^2*35’] = 2x(x+7)-6(x+7) / X(x+7) +5(x+7) = (2x-6) (x+7) / (x+5) (x+7) [ cancel (x+7) from numerator and denominator] = 2x-6 / X+5
you lost me there, i dont understand the first step
My bad, we first split 8x.
what do you mean by splitting 8x ?
I cannot explain this in words my dear friend, i am very sorry, i hope someone else could help you.
sorry dude, what he meant is factorize each line so top line 2x^2 + 8x - 42 =2 (x - 3) (x + 7) du u understand factorization?
like the reverse of FOIL technique...?
@Jack1 Yes that is what I meant. Thank you.
all good dude
why is it x-3 and x+7 ?
ok, if u multiply out (2x - 6) by (x+7) u get...?
itll equal the 42 that is on the top part
no, using FOIL technique you'll get: (2x - 6) by (x+7) =2x * x + 2x * 7 + -6 * x + -6 * 7 =2x^2 + 14x - 6x - 42 = 2x^2 + 8x - 42
so when u factorise a polynomial (ax^2 + bx + c) your answer will be in the form of (3x + 7 ) times (2x - 5) or something similar
so to do this question properly, u need to learn the rules for factorization properly so maybe checkout: http://www.purplemath.com/modules/simpfact.htm http://www.sosmath.com/algebra/factor/fac02/fac02.html so u understand it a bit better...
anyways, the steps @Dhroov took before is: factor the top line factor the bottom line find a similar factor top and bottom, which then cancel each other out that your left with is lowest common denominator = answer as a fraction, the only way u can get smaller is if u divide with remainders, which u shouldn't have to learn
but yeah, study up on factoring polynomials and FOIL method... u'lll be doing A LOT of it @spidey
