In your own words, explain how polarized sunglasses work. Describe the properties of electromagnetic waves and interactions that this technology targets.

Google works real well: http://science.howstuffworks.com/innovation/everyday-innovations/sunglass6.htm

OpenStudy (theeric):

I agree with NoelGreco! If you want a little more in-depth information: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polarizer howstuffworks.com doesn't get as technical as Wikipedia. But Wikipedia is sometimes too technical, and less moderated.

OpenStudy (theeric):

However, I'm not sure what technology sunglasses use, sorry! Good luck! Hopefully it's in your book, or something!

Polarization is a way of making electric field in em wave vibrate only in a particular way cutting off its vibration in all other directions. In circular polarized light, for eg .E field will vibrate in a circle ,in linear polarized light it will vibrate along a single line. Some materials called polarizers do this by various techniques. The polarization by absorption is used to create linearly polarized light in sunglasses. The crystals of sunglasses absorb waves parallel to their direction of alignment with each other and hence light is polarized perpendicularly to the direction of alignment of crystals.
